Eagles Stay Hot, Shutout Colts

MSD Baseball 1Thursday afternoon the Coral Springs Colts made the trip to Parkland in search of redemption after falling to the Stoneman Douglas Eagles 7-0 at home earlier in the season. Since the loss to the Eagles, the Colts have gone 3-1 to improve their record to 7-5. As for the Eagles, with their win over Deerfield Beach on Tuesday, they improved their winning streak to nine games and remain a perfect 6-0 within the district.

Junior LHP Brandon Kaminer (4-0) got the start for the Eagles. Kaminer has not allowed an earned run in his past three starts and has struck out 17 batters in 18 innings pitched. On the mound for the Colts was junior RHP Max Lazar (3-1) who leads his team in strikeouts. Lazar went the distance in this one but the two runs he gave up in the first inning were all that the Eagles needed to hang on for their tenth straight win. Kaminer picked up his fifth win of the season, giving up six hits in the shutout and fanning 10 of the 29 batters that he faced for a season high 10 strikeouts.

After Kaminer made short work of the top of the Colts’ order, the Eagles came to bat in the bottom of the first, scoring the only two runs of the game. Senior Brady Norris led off the game with a single and Colton Welker, who leads the team in hits, also singled, setting up 1st and 2nd for Jonathon Pino. During the at-bat, Lazar balked and Norris and Welker were able to advance, setting up runners in scoring position. Pino capitalized on their position and hit a sac-fly to center field, bringing in Norris on the tag-up for the first run of the game. Chad McDaniel then singled, setting up 1st and 3rd. On the ensuing double steal attempt, Welker scored from third and McDaniel was able to advance to third base, but was stranded on third and the inning ended with Stoneman Douglas leading 2-0.

DSC_0051The Colts had a chance to do some damage in the second with Darrin Brown on third after hitting a ground-rule double and Matt Leconte on second after getting walked. With two outs, junior Nick Volpe came to the plate looking to drive in Brown and Leconte, but a groundout ended the inning.

After the chance the Colts had in the second inning to tie or take the lead, Kaminer struck out the next five batters he faced. Once again, in the 6th inning the Colts had a chance to do some damage with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Kaminer kept his composure and got out of the jam.

In the 7th inning the Colts had yet another chance to put some runs on the board, but failed to do so. After Nick Volpe and Sean Baran singled and Luis Victoria walked, the bases were loaded for the Colts with two outs. The Eagles pulled Kaminer after 6.2 innings and put in senior Brady Norris to seal the deal. Norris got the job done, getting John Lombardi to groundout to the third baseman to end the game. With the 2-0 victory over Coral Springs, the Eagles extend their winning streak to 10 games and remain perfect against district opponents (7-0).

Both the Eagles and the Colts have tournaments scheduled over Spring break and will only have one district game remaining upon their return. Stoneman Douglas can clinch the 9A District 11 Title with a win over rival Taravella on April 1st, the Taravella Trojans are currently in second to the Eagles with a 5-1 record against district opponents.
